9 Cent Camaro
My Uncle bought this car new in 1967 from the local Chevrolet dealership. When I was a kid my uncle would take me for a ride in this car and every since then I always wanted it. As I got older I would see him at family functions and would always ask him to sell me the car, telling him that I had the trailer with me to take it home.
In 2006 on fathers day he called me and said he wanted to talk to me about something, I asked what, he said I think I have something I think you want, something thats a 67. I said yeah right and I asked how much. I told him he may want more than I could afford. He said you bring me 9 pennies and the car is yours. I laughed, of course not believing him, and I said really how much, he said come over and lets talk. I go over that day and we talk and he was very serious, I said are you sure you want to do this, he looked at me and laughed, as to say, you idiot I'm trying to give you a car, I told him I was going to take it if he was sure thats what he wanted to do. He said to me that I didn't ask you to come over for nothing so where is my money.
I go to my truck and get a nickel and 4 pennies and return to give him the money. He said, I told you I wanted 9 pennies, but that would do. He stood, walked over to the floor furnance and dropped each coin inside. He walked back to a file cabinet and retrieved an envelope dated 1970 that held the title, this is when he finished paying the car off. He signed it and handed it to me and said, I only ask that you do 2 things. Keep it as original as possible and not sell it to make a profit from it, I told him I could do that. I hugged him and said thank you but I still just had to know about the 9 cent.
So I asked him, where did the 9 cent come from? He said that a guy came by and offered him $9,000.00 for it and he turned him down, and the way he saw it that wether he had the 9,000 or the car that his son was going to end up with one of the two.
(remember I said it was fathers day)
He said "My son came over and didn't say happy fathers day, buy me a card or check on me to see how I was doing and everytime he comes over he avoids me like I'm going to ask him to help me with something".
My uncle's health is not so good and he knew he would never get to drive the car again. His son is not mechanically inclined and would have never gotten it going again either. My uncle has watched me over the years do some stock and crazy projects and I think he knew I would take care of the car.
My son and I picked up the car the next day and took it to the car wash for a good bath, took it to my shop and parked it inside in a corner.
I have been busy with other projects since I received the car and didn't really have any extra money to put into it until now. He loved this car for sure so I hope to get it rolling soon and go take my uncle for a ride.
The car has a 327 295HP V8, 4 speed, 12 bolt rear axle, factory dual exhaust. Bucket seats, factory tach, center console with gauges.
He ordered it as a basic car but with the running gear of something like an SS.
65,000 OG miles.
